Many studies have shown that vitamin D3 levels of 50-60 decrease cancer risk and provide optimal cardiac, bone, and autoimmune health
benefits. See www.vitamindcouncil.org
for a review of these legitimate studies.
The chart in the New York Times article published in late November 2010 states that up to 4,000 units daily is safe over 9 years of age! That's 28,000 per week.
There are very few studies that suggest any downside to even higher doses, except for people with calcium problems or calcium kidney stones. I do not usually recommend calcium supplements except in women who are at a
high osteoporosis risk and who don't get adequate calcium in food. I do recommend 3-4 servings per day of calcium containing food. So I see no reason to change my suggestions on Vitamin D.
