We now have the equipment to perform at-home
monitoring for sleep apnea syndrome. This is not covered by insurance and costs $300.
This test is suited to those of you who possibly have loud,
gasping snoring, maybe with daytime fatigue or early morning headaches, and are not ready to commit to an all-night in-patient formal study.
In order to be formally studied, an overnight 'in-patient' study
in an accredited sleep facility is necessary. This requires sleeping in an in-patient environment with electrodes on the head, and other monitors on the nose and fingers. While not an
awful night, it is relatively unpleasant, but is covered by insurance plans.
The home monitoring equipment we purchased is a simple nasal
prong device, and a simple finger monitor. It is best suited for those who MAY have sleep apnea (often accused by the significant other of loud snoring), but not necessarily having the
fatigue, headaches, or gasping. This is an excellent screening test which enables a much more pleasant opportunity for a decent night's sleep! If it turns out that you do not have
significant apnea episodes (where your airway is obstructed), you do not need the in-patient study. On the other hand, if the study is positive, you then know you do need a formal in-patient
study, where the technician on duty can properly diagnose the extent of the problem.
So if you think this might be a worthwhile $300 expenditure, call
Jovana here, at 212-879-4700, ext 259. She will arrange to have you pick up the monitor, and 'show you the ropes'. You will be required to either drop the monitor off here the next
morning, or FEDEX it back (in the package provided) the next AM.
We will run it through the computer, and have results for you within 48 hours.
