Propecia
Propecia is very effective in preventing hair loss.  We are comfortable prescribing this drug to individuals at the beginning of the hair loss process, especially if one has a family history of early male-pattern baldness.

There are very few side effects, though 2% of patients complain of decreased sexual function which is temporary, and reversible even while continuing the drug.  About 30% of men regrow hair, sometimes vigorously.

Propecia can lower the PSA level, which is important in diagnosing prostate cancer in men over 40.

Propecia costs about $60/month, and it is not covered by insurance.  At $700/year, it is still considerably cheaper than a hair transplant.

If we do prescribe Propecia, it is a good idea to take a few close-up photos, front and side views, so that comparison photos can be taken every six months.  This helps to determine whether to continue the medication.  Propecia should not be handled by pregnant women.
