Primary Care

As primary care physicians, we are your first call for most medical issues.

Do not hesitate to call us for problems ranging from urinary infections to sinus and ear infections, to asthma, palpitations and back spasms.  In many cases, we can directly solve the problem at hand, including in-house usage of physical therapy for acute pain relief, in-house psychiatry referral and, on Tuesdays, in-house dermatology consultation.

If there is any question, do not hesitate to call.

Your doctor can determine whether you should come in to the office or whether a direct referral is in order. Sometimes a trip to the office allows an assessment to best determine which specialist is most appropriate for the problem at hand. it is much more likely that we can get an emergency referral to a specialist if you are in the office at the time.

All About The Physical Exam

Physicals are often offered annually by the various medical plans. Historically, we recommended a physical every three years to individuals under the age of forty, every two years under fifty, and annually thereafter. If a plan offers an annual physical, we recommend you take advantage of the physical. Annual physicals allow a better understanding of the patient as a human being in the context of his work, family, and other stressors. Physicals allow early issues and problems to be discussed, habits to be re-evaluated, and better long-term doctor-patient relationships.

A complete physical takes about thirty minutes and consists of a lot of questions, a physical exam, blood and urine, electrocardiogram (heart evaluations), sometimes chest x-ray, bone density testing, vaccination update, and, if necessary, plans for diagnosing various complaints, and plans for therapeutic intervention. It is always a good idea to come prepared with a list of questions and any information (from the Internet, etc.) that you might be interested in discussing.

When you leave the office after a physical, you should have the feeling that all areas have been reviewed.

Your physician should be aware of your genetic and environmental worries, your health habits, your health complaints and your fears. You should have had your questions answered, or at least there should be a plan to answer any significant health care questions. You should feel that your skin, heart, lungs, blood pressure, lymph glands, abdominal organs, etc. have been evaluated. You should feel that your psychological situation has been addressed, that your lifestyle habits have been discussed, and that there is either an acknowledgment of good health or a plan to institute changes.

If there are problems, there should be a diagnostic plan, which may include labs, various tests, or referrals to specialists. There should be a therapeutic plan, which can include natural interventions, nutritional intervention, prescription medication, lifestyle and habit change intervention, etc.

A Plan For Your Better Health & Well-being

A patient should leave the office with a list of suggestions, including vitamins, nutritional or exercise suggestions, referrals, prescription medications, and a follow-up plan, if necessary The patient should understand any therapeutic intervention, including when and how to take medications what to expect, when to call if there is a problem, and a "fallback position" in case therapy isn't working according to plan. That "fallback position" might be to start a medication which we hand you but tell you not to fill right away, or it might be a referral to a subspecialist, or it might be to simply call and report back to us.

It should be noted that medical questions that have any urgency at all should be handled by phone, not e-mail. We will respond to e-mail medical questions with a 72-hour turnaround time. Direct interaction allows a much more accurate intervention, and we would not want to be misled by an Internet miscommunication. In addition, we will not be checking our medical e-mail at all during the day!
