Liz Curtin Artist's Statement Re-think; Re-work; Re-order; Re-place; Re-duce; Re-use; Re-considerMy happiest moments are out on the street: foraging, discovering and searching out "lost" objects to use in my
sculpture. Everywhere I go I find gems that most people consider garbage. They litter the gutter, hide under cars, lurk in abandoned doorways, get caught in dirt or shrubbery or are put out on garbage collection days.
Collected objects
range from the smallest screw or washer to age & weather altered paper, cardboard, wood, fabric, metal, plastic or rubber, to larger objects that sometimes defy description. I make a home for all these discards in my studio and eventually combine the flotsam & jetsam into works of art.
The methods of construction are simple and straightforward. I usually prefer screws and nails but am not averse to exploring any method that works to hold the piece together.
My painting style
evolved from my sculpture, echoing the shapes and symbols that have become my oeuvre. I enjoy using a wide variety of mediums including watercolor, fluid acrylic, ink, metallic pigments, collage and mixed media.Whether I am painting or making sculpture, my aim is to create visually stunning work from personal thoughts, emotions and references. |
