Dr. Yaffe's Response to the New York Times Zetia Article

I have carefully reviewed the Zetia studies, and I have reviewed the opinions of the top cholesterol specialists in the city, as well as in the country. There is complete agreement that the study headlined in the New York Times showed that the addition of Zetia to 80mg of Zocor lowered the cholesterol by an additional 20%, without any significant side effects!

The Times stated that there was increased plaque. The study looked at neck artery plaque, and while there was more plaque in the Zetia group, it was statistically insignificant. In addition, the patients in the study had a specific type of cholesterol problem, with very high levels, and they were very poorly controlled by either set of medicines. So does this information even apply?

We do not know yet whether Zetia definitely decreases the risk of heart attacks and strokes, because those studies will take 2 more years to complete. But we think that because there is a 20% reduction in cholesterol, there should be long term benefit from the Zetia.

So it is my strong belief that the safest way to control cholesterol well is not to increase the statin dose- which would definitely increase side effects-- but to remain on the Zetia.
