First Line Therapy and Mediterranean Diet plan (FLT)

  • Melissa Sauter and Alyssa Henkin, 2 excellent PA's, are running this nationally organized program in our office.  (The initial visits for the program are on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.)

  • The program is a highly motivational program designed to develop lifestyle choices that result in weight loss, muscle /fat ratio improvement, stress reduction,  physical therapy and fitness routines (including posture exercises working with Sam Lippin, our physical therapist in the office.)

  • The program is ideal for patients who are stressed, patients who are overweight, and patients who have cholesterol, sugar or other lipid abnormalities.

  • It is a structured 3 month program in this office, with an initial visit, followed by five 20 minute visits with Melissa or Alyssa, and one with Sam Lippin.

  • First visit consists of establishing baseline weight, body fat measurement, waist measurement, and body metabolic index (BMI) analysis.  Subsequent visits attempt to track improvements.

  • Our initial patient lost 30 pounds and has done incredibly well, and remains highly motivated.  He will continue visits every 2 months after the program is finished.

  • We can often get these PA visits covered by insurance as there are usually diagnoses, ranging from high triglycerides, cholesterol, sugar, or fatigue,  heartburn, etc.

  • We determine an individualized nutrition and menu program for each patient, as well as an individualized exercise program.

  • In some cases, patients may wish to go online and purchase a Fitbit from Amazon for $99, (see www.fitbit.com ).  This helps to monitor daytime and nighttime calorie expenditure, and helps to motivate caloric intake restriction!

  • Supplements are an important part of the program including 2 Ultrameal Protein Shakes per day (which Dr. Yaffe has been using for 15 years).  Additionally, EPA-DHA omega 3 fatty acids, CoQ10, vitamin D3, and other supplements are an important part of the program.
  • Participants eat a Mediterranean diet plan, eating something every few hours.

  • Follow up visits are structured to review fitness level, weight, fat levels and general progress and are highly motivational.  You are willed by Melissa and Alyssa to succeed!!

  • Subsequent follow ups after the official program ends increases long term success.

  • Dr. Yaffe will also be giving an independent after office hours talk on the latest thinking on longevity, vitality, successful aging and the role of stem cells and regenerative medicine.
