Osteoporosis and Posture
Everyone feels better when they stand up straight. Everyone looks better when they stand up straight. Bellies automatically are flatter when one stands up straight. Everyone is taller when they stand up straight. People can sidle through tight spaces when they stand up straight. It costs nothing to stand up straight. So with all these obvious advantages to good posture, how do we explain that few have it? Few stand up straight. how can that be?
It requires effort, good bones, and good calcium nutrition to maintain good posture. Everything pulls us forward. Sitting at a desk, reading, poor eyesight, having more weight on the front of the body, than on the back (more of a problem in women, though not exclusively a problem of women), and weak belly muscles.
Posture training can come from a good exercise technique, from physical therapy, chiropractry, pilades, alexander technique, feldencrais therapy, and posture ball exercises. Posture training essentially involves developing the abdominal muscles to act as a belly brace, the posterior neck muscles to act as a neck brace, and to have good walking and movement and sitting habits.
Good desk ergonomic arrangements are critical.
If the posture is good, there is less chance that a vertebral disc will collapse, further compromising the integrity of the posture. Like a stack of blocks, if one vertebra collapses asymmetrically, the entire stack is tilted. This leads to further instability of the stack.
Ultimately, one may develop a bent-over posture, impossible to correct.
So lets work on postural muscular development. lets prevent asymmetric vertebral pressures, which constantly put a strain on discs, leading to ultimate vertebral collapses. So that even if the bones are weak, there is less danger of collapse and the subsequent pain and height loss
